Buy-to-let property investors 'should conduct tenant checks'

People who choose to invest in buy-to-let properties in the UK
should make sure they go through tenant checks before letting them
out.
This is according to the National Landlords Association, which
warned that a failure to do so can result in problems for such
homeowners.
David Salusbury, chairman of the organisation - which is a
representative body for private residential landlords in Britain
and claims to represent over 19,000 members - said background
checks on potential renters is not an optional extra.
He added: "If a potential tenant has a track record of not paying
their rent or states they are employed when in fact they got
sacked, the landlord should know."
The expert went on to note that buy-to-let investors cannot afford
to make the "costly mistake" of failing to check on people's
ability to pay the rent.
Tenant checks include such things as employment references, County
Court judgments and bankruptcy and insolvency searches, among other
things.
